I had the opportunity to spend time with DJ "That's So Raben" recently on this shoot. I have her playlist on repeat and I suggest you do too! In our time together Alanna told me that she used to DJ in college (SUNY Purchase) for her friends and requests to DJ came from friends of friends so she kept doing what she loved and spinning her craft. She didn't go to college thinking she would become a DJ and after college she worked at a film company but still DJ'd part-time spinning for all the film premieres her company ran. Through hard work and the love for the music ultimately her passion for the art became her career. I asked her what was a special moment when she first started to DJ, "Every year my college holds an annual festival called Culture Shock. The last year I attended I got the opportunity to spin. It just so happens Drake was the headliner. You could say I was "so far gone" like his album title ;)" Learn more about this talented womenpreneur below in my BTS Q&A. Thank you Alanna for being our Muse of the Week. xo, Stacy
1. Are you a subway or car (via, uber, lyft) girl?
"Uber Everywhere" ft. Travis Scott is more or less my theme song. As a native Long Islander, I find myself missing the feeling of being in a car. Windows down, stereo cranked and cruising to the beach are the heart and soul of my teenage years. I try to go home once a month to visit my family and cruise the block for all nostalgic purposes.
2. Favorite spot to be creative?
The DJ Booth. Playing records is therapeutic to me. I am able to express myself in ways I never knew possible while in the booth. Nothing beats the feeling of interacting with your crowd through a record. All the stress that we as humans tend to accumulate can disappear at the drop of a record needle. Having this creative outlet has helped me tremendously as a person.
3. Causes you advocate for?
Girl Power. I throw an event called "Pussy Power" every month in Brooklyn with a group of amazing women and it is truly my happy place. The goal is to provide a platform for female and female-identified artists to empower themselves. Apart from DJs, we team up with fashion designers, nail artists, hair stylists, tattoo artists (you name it!) which makes our event highly interactive and an experience for everyone involved. It is such a beautiful thing to see women come together in support of one of another. Rather than advocate for, you could easily say I live for this cause.
4. Favorite quote?
"Be a Fruit Loop in a world full of Cheerios." Individuality is the major key to success in life. I’ve learned this as I’ve gotten older and began to find myself. Being yourself is the dopest trend you can follow. Embrace your individuality.
5. Tell us about the last moment you shared with someone?
My cat Wiz and I watch nature documentaries on Netflix before we go to sleep. I just woke up to her staring at me for the next episode to stream. Does that count?
