Meet the Boy in this story Joe Pascoe...
Joe grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. After finishing high school he studied Architecture at the University of Auckland, graduating with a Master’s degree. Around the time he began his Master’s degree he started writing and recording music in his spare time with two friends from university, having played guitar since he was 14.
When the music they were making began receiving a lot of attention from blogs and labels, music became a full time career. He formed the group ‘No Wyld’ along with Mo Kheir and Brandon Black, and they recorded an EP ‘Abstract’ that gained further attention in the USA after the lead single ‘Odyssey’ became the 3rd most viral track on Spotify. The group moved to New York where they signed a deal with Columbia Records.
Since the release of their second EP ‘Ascension’ in late 2015, the lead single ‘Let Me Know’ has racked up millions of plays across Spotify and YouTube. The group has continued to grow and is now starting to work with multiple other artists as writers and producers, as well as creating their own new material, with Joe specializing as producer and instrumentalist.
I met Lily a few years ago in a collaborative NYFW show produced by my good friend Claudine founder of Caravan Stylist Studio. Lily's spirit is infectious. At my most recent NYFW show she said to me, "you put on the best shows and one day I am going to perform at your show." Thank you Lily that means so much to me and you know I love a woman with confidence and Lily truly is a confident woman inside and out. We do have some cool things up our sleeves that I look forward to sharing with you soon. Get to know Lily and her incredible talented man Joe below in my BTS Q&A interview! Thank you both for being part of our first ever muse couple feature. It was a blast shooting this series with you two. You both inspire us and we are excited for everyone to learn more about you both below. xx, Stacy
1. Are you a Subway or Car (via, uber, lyftt), bus, walk girl?
Lily: In the summer I'm a walk-girl, but any other season I'm a subway girl. Uber used to be my go-to but these surge prices kill me, so unless I'm going to a premiere or something where I really have to get all dressed up, 99% of the time I'm taking the subway.
Joe: Mostly Subway and walking in NYC. I'll occasionally take an Uber if it's a late night out or on the way to an event but the Subways here are so easy. We don't have anything like it back home in NZ so the trains are still quite a novelty to me. In the summer I'll walk and sometimes ride my bike everywhere.
2. Favorite spot to be creative?
Lily: Anywhere. I find myself wanting to be the most creative when I'm at home, but creativity really strikes me when I'm somewhere completely inconvenient, like in public in a subway station without any instruments or my computer and I end up whispering/humming voice memos into my iPhone.
Joe: Most of my creative time is spent in recording studios but I find I often come up with my best ideas when I'm not even trying, usually in the shower or on the train or working out. Maybe because I can just space out and I have nothing else to do/no distractions. So I guess I don't really have one spot - influence can come at any time and place.
3. Causes you advocate for?
Lily: I am a feminist first and foremost, so I advocate for women's rights and gender equality. I also advocate for the de-stigmatization of mental illness, nobody should feel any more embarrassed or bad about seeing a mental healthcare professional than they should a dentist. We all need to take care of ourselves to the best of our ability. I am also a body-positivity advocate, as a plus size model, I think women of all shapes and sizes are beautiful and their beauty should be represented equally in media. Nobody should have to turn on the television or open a magazine and not see anyone they identify with.
Joe: I'm a huge believer in equality for all people. I know we think most people would say that but you only have to look at the poll spikes whenever Donald Trump makes a bigoted comment to know that this is unfortunately just not true. LGBT rights and race equality are big topics worldwide at the moment and are both causes I support heavily. To do otherwise is just backwards and unnatural. I know far too many people who's lives are effected by racism, sexism and bigotry to not support and advocate for them. I'm also a major animal lover - I regularly encourage people to adopt from shelters rather than buy their pets from breeders and shops. There are already far too many unwanted dogs and cats in the world.
4. Favorite quote?
Lily: "Be you- everyone else is taken."
Joe: "I always prefer to believe the best of everybody. It saves so much trouble." - Rudyard Kipling
5. Tell us about your last moments you shared with someone?
Lily: My boyfriend, Joe Pascoe (of Columbia Record's New Zealand-born band "No Wyld") and I just went to Australia for the holidays to visit his extended family, and shared a very long, 23 hour, moment on the plane ride back. I have never been on a plane for more than 8 hours so trusting someone enough to travel that far for them and trusting that it would be a good positive experience was a lot for me. We had a moment on the way back where we shared a "thank god, we made it" look. It was our first trip together as a couple and it was quite the important one. Being that far away from home, and my family, especially on Christmas was a serious test of our strength, but the fact that we got to hold baby Tasmanian Devils made it more than worth it.
Joe: It was my birthday the other day. In past years I've had big parties with lots of people but this year I spent it with just one person, my girlfriend Lily Lane. We stayed inside (it's far too cold in NYC right now), ordered delivery, watched movies. She baked a cake. It was super chill and really nice. I'm working all day everyday so having some stress free downtime where she pampered me was great.
